Camping and Hiking

Whether you are an experienced camping and hiking family or just thinking about sharing the outdoors experience with your kids for the first time, Mother Nature has something for everyone. The great thing about camping and hiking is the evolution of your relationship with Mother Nature and the great outdoors over time.

FivePax

We started FivePax as a family of five, including a grade-schooler, a preschooler, and a baby. The summer we launched the website, however, Brittany and I went on a 4-day backpacking adventure without the kids. After re-grounding ourselves into our love of nature, we have since focused a lot of our efforts on inclusively and educationally maintaining the entire family’s relationship with the outdoors. We have found that there are so many different ways to enjoy nature, whether via backpacking, car camping vacations, or traveling in an RV. Even within camping there are many options such as KOA style camping, dispersed camping, or creative ways to enjoy nature such as camping on a farm.

Camping and Hiking Content

We hope you find FivePax and the articles in this category as a great resource for your family outdoor adventures. We cover family camping essentials, family camping checklists for both beginners and experienced backpackers, and fun activities such as the National Parks Junior Ranger program. As we continue to hike and camp with our family, as well as meet excellent people around the world doing the same, we hope to build our content that matches our enthusiasm. We hope to contribute to the community of nature lovers out there with tips, tricks, activities, and destinations that connect people to nature.

The Ultimate Kid-approved guide to Arches National Park

Arches National Park is one of the “mighty five” national parks in Utah along with Zion National Park, Bryce Canyon National Park, Capitol Reef, and nearby Canyonlands.  The park boasts supernatural rock formations and stunning landscapes, including the famous delicate arch that can be seen on every Utah license plate.  Our kid-friendly guide to Arches National Park delivers the essentials you need to make the most of your trip.

The park is massive with plenty to offer, so having a plan with the kids is helpful.  On our first five day trip to Moab, we planned to visit Arches, Canyonlands, and Dead Horse State Park, but were so impressed with Arches that we never left.  This was a easy for us since we live a few hours away, but this guide should help narrow down the highlights.

Taking the kids to Georgia’s Little Grand Canyon

About

For a weekend adventure in the southeast United States that rivals the beauty of the actual Grand Canyon, if not the size and scope, Providence Canyon is a great option.  Known as Georgia’s Little Grand Canyon, Providence Canyon is a 1,103 acre Georgia state park near Lumpkin, Georgia, about two and a half hours southwest of Atlanta.

With massive gullies and 16 canyons that tower as high as 150 feet, the views of the chasms, plateaus, cliffs, and pinnacles are spectacular.  Activities in the park include hiking and camping, along with full facilities, a nice amount of open space, and plenty of picnic tables to feed the family.

How to travel more with kids

We have all come across and admired full-time travel families who sold their homes, quit their jobs, and picked up nomadic jobs in marketing or writing code and thought, “I have too much at stake to drop everything and do that, but I really want a slice of that experience. I need to know how to travel more with my kids!”  We have lived and continue to live this struggle but have hit a pretty sweet stride in regularly traveling with our kids and are here to share a few tips on how you can experience more.
